What Outright International does

Outright International is a New York–based human rights organization focused on LGBTIQ people around the world. Founded in 1990 as the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, it took its current name in 2022. It works across Asia and the Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa, Southwest Asia and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, and the Americas, with particular attention to the Caribbean.

Its approach centers on partnerships with local LGBTIQ groups: strengthening their capacity, documenting human rights violations, and advocating for inclusion and equality with governments and international bodies. Outright has held special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council since 2010, which lets it raise LGBTIQ concerns in UN settings, and it publishes human rights research and country briefs. It also directs support to people in crisis — its donate page gives examples ranging from a week of internet access for $10 to a month of safe housing for $250 and a week of humanitarian aid for five people for $1,000.

Outright holds a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator. Its homepage says more than US$125 million has been stripped from the global LGBTIQ movement, which it cites as a reason support matters now.
