What Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans does
Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans (MSHV) is a Wheaton, Illinois, nonprofit that helps veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, along with their families, find stable housing and regain their footing. Vietnam War veteran Bob Adams and Gulf War veteran Dirk Enger founded it in 2007. It serves veterans of any era across 13 counties of northern Illinois.
MSHV runs transitional housing for male veterans at the Marine LCpl. Nicholas Larson Home and affordable homes in Wheaton for single men and women veterans. It also provides scattered-site permanent supportive housing, homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing for veteran families, and an employment program. Its Army Capt. Kevin C. Landeck Freedom Commissary gives out clothing, household items and other basic needs. Its Candid profile says it serves more than 400 veteran households a year. In early 2026 it announced plans for a 20-unit apartment building in downtown Wheaton, funded mostly by a $10.1 million state housing grant, as part of an effort to end veteran homelessness in DuPage County.
Charity Navigator rates MSHV three of four stars. It runs on about $5 million a year, and nearly all of its revenue comes from contributions, according to its 2024 IRS filing.
