What Kids in Need of Defense does
Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) was founded in 2008 by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie to close a gap in legal help for unaccompanied and separated children: young people who migrate alone or become separated from their families. Based in Washington, D.C., it works across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, including Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
KIND's model relies on a network of more than 800 pro bono partners worldwide, whose volunteer lawyers work alongside KIND staff. KIND says more than 15,000 children in the U.S. have received legal representation. It has also educated more than 72,000 children on their legal rights, given psychosocial support to more than 18,000 children and families, and helped about 4,000 children with legal services in Europe. It also does policy advocacy and trains governments and international organizations.
Charity Navigator gives KIND a Three-Star rating (84%). For 2024, KIND reported about $79.0 million in revenue and $79.6 million in expenses (ProPublica).
