What Eden Village does
Eden Village builds gated neighborhoods of tiny homes for people who have been chronically homeless and live with a physical or mental disability. Residents must have been homeless for at least a year, or several times over three years, and be able to take part in community life. Each resident has a permanent home of their own, with support services and shared community spaces on site, and pays $300 a month for rent and utilities.
The first village opened in Springfield, Missouri, in August 2018. It is run by The Gathering Tree, Inc., a Springfield nonprofit that has been tax-exempt since 2013. The Eden Village website now lists ten communities in nine states, from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Phoenix, Arizona.
The Springfield organization is modest in size, with about $1.2 million in expenses in 2024. Its donate page is set up mainly for larger gifts: donors who want to fund a home are asked to contact staff for a customized package.
