What /dev/color does
/dev/color was founded in 2015 by Makinde Adeagbo, an engineer at Pinterest, to build a support network for Black software engineers. It now calls itself a global career accelerator for Black software engineers, technologists and executives. Its IRS filings list it in Concord, California, and its programs mix online and in-person formats.
Its flagship A* program puts members into squads of seven to nine Black software engineers and engineering managers. Over a year, they set ambitious career goals, map out how to reach them, and hold each other accountable. Nearly 1,000 leaders have gone through it. /dev/color also runs a six-month hybrid Executive Accelerator with coaching and masterclasses for senior leaders, plus member events and a Slack community. It reports more than 600 professional members and relationships with more than 500 employers.
/dev/color is a small organization, with about $2.7 million in revenue in 2024, roughly 94% of it from contributions. Charity Navigator rates it three stars.
